Match Report: 7th Match – Grenadines Divers vs Salt Pond Breakers

November 10, 2020

Salt Pond Breakers won the toss and choose to bat.

Asif Hooper as usual took the new ball. It was a tidy start until the final delivery as the class of Ambris took a straight ball and pulled it over square for four. Kevin Abraham started the second over steadily and forced Lewis to try something different during the fourth delivery, and nearly perished skying one over mid off – the over conceding only 7 runs taking the score to 14/0.

Tyrone Theophile bowled the third over with his off spin. Theophile had Ambris caught off his 3rd delivery but it was a no ball. The free hit delivery was caught at long on, so not costing much. The final delivery of the over was cut through the off side for four. Kevin Abraham returned for the final powerplay over and was struck over long off for six. Abraham struck gold on the 3rd delivery, having Ambris lbw trying to play a slog sweep. Breakers finishing the powerplay on 33/1 with Abraham continuing to have a good VPL bowling in the powerplay.

Theophile removed Lewis in the 5th over, having him caught at long on by Obed McCoy. Tijourn Pope advanced down the track and was cleaned bowled, missed the line completely, putting a further dent into the Breakers batting. It was the perfect over and it was a double wicket maiden.

Geron Whyllie was into the attack for the 6th over with his leg break and bowled really well, only 5 runs off the over. Spin continued to be the order of the day as Asif Hooper and Geron Whyllie bowled the 7th and 8th over respectively. Whyllie had Thomas bamboozled and had him bowled with a straight leg break. Although Johnson swung Whyllie over long on for six over the final delivery of his spell, he only conceded 11 runs from his two overs, doing a brilliant job. Breakers 59/4 from 8 overs.

Razine Browne, specialist death bowler for Divers in both edition, bowled the 9th over. Johnson flick for four off the 2nd deliver but John was run out on the 3rd delivery with a total mixup between himself & Johnson. Ricavo Williams struck his first delivery for six over long off and attempted a pull shot the next delivery but could only drag it on his stumps. Sween, the new man in, flicked his first delivery to the long leg boundary for four, taking the score to 75/6.

McCoy bowled the final over and the first delivery went for four leg bye. The over wasn’t bad in the context, conceding nine and the Breakers finishing on 84/7, an interesting game on hand.

Shem Browne and Asif Hooper opened the innings, facing up against Delorn Johnson. Shem was attacking and got two boundaries off the over. Ambris bowled the 2nd over, conceding seven runs, the game firmly in either sides favour at 15/0. Ryan John bowling the 3rd over was flat bat straight down the ground for four by Shem, continuing to take the attack to the bowlers. John bounced back well to only concede two runs from the remaining five deliveries. Ambris bowled the final powerplay over and was carved over covers by Browne for four. Two deliveries later he was bowled through to swing a length ball from around the wicket to the fence – the powerplay finishing on 29/1.

Javid Harry bowled an eventful 5th over, having Asif Hooper caught by a blinder from Tijourn Pope to hang on to the fierce cut shot. Theophile struck a sweet straight six to take the score to 45/2. Jeremy Layne bowled a good 6th over to keep the score to 52/2. Divers started to make a mess of the chase as they lost three wickets for 13 runs, losing all their recognised batsmen.

With 20 runs required from two overs, Tijourn Pope was entrusted with the 9th over. He conceded two singles off of the first three deliveries but went on to bowl 4 wides and conceded two runs off the penultimate delivery leaving 12 runs required from the final over. Jeremy Layne was the man for the final over and the first three deliveries only contained one wide. The 4th delivery was struck down long off by McCoy and he was slack in his running and got run out going back for the 2nd. The penultimate delivery only went for two, all but ending the hopes of the Divers. The final delivery was driven over cover for four by Abraham and the Breakers winning by two runs.
