Match Report: 1st Match – Grenadines Divers vs Salt Pond Breakers
The first game of the VPL T10 saw the clash between Grenadines Divers and Salt Pond Breakers. Grenadines Divers won the toss and chose to bat. Delorn Johnson started with ball in hand and produced an excellent first over, seeing a few flash and misses, mainly in part to the extra bounce that is the norm for Johnson.
Shem Browne didn’t waste time there after, laying into the Breakers bowling attack. He gave a strong start, but when he departed with the score on 39/2 from 4.1 overs, things slowly went downhill thereafter. The part time spin of Sunil Ambris & Donwell Hector combined for 4 wickets for 12 runs in 3 overs. The Breakers continued with their tidy bowling to bowl out the Divers for 68 off their allotted 10 overs.
With less than 7 required per over in their chase, the Breakers started cautiously, negating the threat of the dangerous Obed McCoy, who bowled at a lively pace, extracting good bounce from the surface. The Divers pulled their way back into the game when leg spinner Geron Whyllie came on wielded some Shane Warnesque magic. The score quickly went from 22-1 to 36-5 – Whyllie bowling an impressive spell of 4-9 from 2 overs.
The Breakers needed 25 off the last 3 overs, with one of those still to be bowled by the clever Obed McCoy. Urnel Thomas played a few lusty shots which inched the Breakers closer to their target. The penultimate over proved very costly for the Grenadines Divers when a tardy misfield at third man brought 4 fours. The very next ball, a chance came a begging again down to third man and went for 4 – too crucial misses. Breakers then went on to win comfortably with 4 balls to spare.
Scores Summary:
Grenadines Divers 68 all out (10 overs)
Salt Pond Breakers 70/7 (9.2)
